Indoor Volleyball

On February 9, 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, William G. Morgan a YMCA physical education director, created a new game called Mintonette as a pastime to be played (preferably) indoors and by any number of players. This games was like tennis and handball.

The first rules, written down by William G Morgan, called for a net 6 ft 6in high, a 25 ft × 50 ft  court, and any number of players. A match was composed of nine innings with three serves for each team in each inning, and no limit to the number of ball contacts for each team before sending the ball to the opponent's' court. In case of a serving error, a second try was allowed. Hitting the ball into the net was considered a foul.

After an observer, Alfred Halstead, noticed the volleying nature of the game at its first exhibition match in 1896, played at the International YMCA Training School. The game quickly became known as volleyball . Volleyball rules were slightly modified by the International YMCA Training School and the game spread around the country to various YMCAs.

Volleyball is a team sport where there are two teams of six players separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other teams court.

There are complicated rules but basicly a player on of of the teams begins a rally by serving the ball from behind the back boundary line. If it goes over the net the receiving team tries not to let it hit the ground, if it hits the serving team gets a point and gets to serve again. The team will try to touch the ball three times before they send it back over the net. The first touch normally will pass it to the setter who will set it for the hitter. The other team then tries to block the ball from coming over to there side. There are 2-3 sets you will play. The first set one of the teams try to get 25 points first. Then the second set they try to get another 25 points. If one of the teams get 25 points first on each set then they win. If one team won the first set and the second team won the second set then they play three sets for 10-15 points. Who ever wins that set wins the game.

There are different positions on the court. If you start from left front that is a hitting space, then there is middle front for blocking and hitting and right front for either setting or hitting. Then starting from right back is where you serve and get any long balls, middle back or libero is normally the first touch if they can get the ball, then there is left back for long balls.

Beach Volleyball

Most early beach volleyball matches were played with teams of at least six players on each side, like indoor volleyball. Two-man beach volleyball game is credited to Paul "Pablo" Johnson.  In the summer of 1930, waiting for players to show up for a six-man game, Johnson decided to try playing with only the two people present. Beach volleyball began to appear in Europe in the 1930s. Then 1940s, doubles tournaments were being played on the beaches of Santa Monica for trophies. The first tournament to offer a prize was held in L.A in 1948. The prize was a case of pepsi. In 1960 there was an attempt to a pro volleyball league. It didn't work but a pro tournament was held in france. Ever since then volleyball has grown.

Beach volleyball is a sport played on sand with  two teams that have two players on each team. It has been an olympic sport since 1996.

Beach volleyball is like indoor volleyball. The object of the game is to send the ball over the net and to try to hit it to the other teams ground. A team is allowed up to three touches to return the ball across the net. The ball is put in play with a serve and keeps going until the ball either goes out it hits the floor on one of the team's side. There are some differences between beach volleyball and indoor.

  • Beach volleyball is played on sand.

  • Most players don't wear shoes when playing beach volleyball.

  • The court is smaller. ( beach - 18 by 8 meters) ( indoor- 18 by 9 meters)

  • The beach court has no attack line. ( the line 3 meters from the net)

  • Two players rather than six.

  • Best of 3 sets played to 21.

  • Open hand touches, tips and dinks are allowed.

  • A block is count as one of the tree touches in beach volleyball.

  • Coaching during matches is not allowed.

  • No rotation but players may switch sides.

  • Legal to cross under the net in beach volleyball as long as you don't interfere in the other players play.

  • Teams switch ends of court ever seven points.

Water Volleyball

The sport was created in November 2008. The sport was created for swimmers, water polo players, and other people who are  interested in aqua sports. The match was held on the January 6th 2009, but  have also been played for fun since 1960s.

Water volleyball also known as Pool Volleyball is a games in many countries with a temperate or tropical climate and sometimes even cold climate. It can be played between two teams consisting of 1-4 players but the teams have to be equal. While serving the ball must be hit upwards towards the receiver. The server is not allowed to be a spike. One team serves for 2 points and then the other team serves. When the score gets to 10 each you start serving 1 serve each.  The first team to 11 wins. If a player tries to harm another player the player will resign the match and maybe even be banned. A ban can last between 1 match to life.
